I recently had the privilege of connecting with several international professional women, where we delved into their backgrounds and career reinvention journeys.
One story stood out. A woman shared that she came to Canada seeking a better future, armed with an impressive résumé: a PhD from her home country and over 10 years of experience in her field. However, upon arriving, she faced significant challenges in securing a job in her area of expertise. After years of struggling with her job search, she decided to pivot and started her own business. It was far from easy, but she persevered and is very happy to have made the jump. She shared that she finally feels in control of her career trajectory. When I asked if she felt she had successfully reinvented her career, her response was insightful: “I had to reinvent myself first before I could successfully reinvent my career.”
So, one might wonder, how do I reinvent myself and my career?
Reflecting on the conversations I’ve had and my own experience with this process, I’ve identified five key strategies to help you navigate this journey of self-reinvention:
1. Clarify Your Identity
A clear sense of identity and direction is the foundation for reinvention. Begin by understanding who you are beyond your past job titles or achievements. What are your values, passions, and strengths?
2. Embrace a Growth Mindset
View challenges as opportunities to grow. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone, acquire new skills, or explore fields you may not have considered before.
3. Leverage Your International Experience
Highlight the transferable skills you’ve gained—such as adaptability, cultural intelligence, or multilingual abilities—and showcase how these qualities add value in your chosen field.
4. Build a Supportive Community
Surround yourself with people who inspire and support your journey. Attend networking events, join professional groups, or seek mentors who understand your experiences. These connections can offer guidance, encouragement, and potential opportunities.
5. Be Proud of Your Story
How you tell your career story matters. View your international experience as a strength and create a story that demonstrates your resourcefulness and determination. Whether in interviews, on your resume, or during networking conversations, focus on how your journey has prepared you to contribute meaningfully to your past, and future career.
Reinventing yourself as part of your career transformation will not only allows you to rediscover your values and interests but also will helps you forge a deeper connection between who you are and what you do!
