I once attended a meetup for international professionals looking to build connections and network. As I walked to the bar to order a drink, I started a conversation with a young fellow who had just landed from Europe and was looking to find a new job in Toronto.
However, as the conversation progressed, it became clear that his experience as a newcomer was overwhelmingly negative. Every aspect of his new life in Canada seemed to disappoint him, from the food to the public transportation system. Despite his friendly demeanor, his constant complaints left me feeling drained and hopeless.
I was determined to NOT let this encounter discourage me…
So I returned to the same meetup the following week. This time, I met a woman who had arrived from Zambia a few months prior. She was a successful financial officer for a major bank in Zambia, but struggled to find a job in her field. Despite facing these challenges including adjusting to her new life in Canada, she showed positivity and resilience. She embraced each obstacle as an opportunity for growth. Her willingness to share her experiences, struggles and insights was truly inspiring, demonstrating that a positive mindset can make all the difference in navigating the complexities of job hunting in a new country.
Reflecting on these encounters, it became evident that the need to adopt a growth mindset in the pursuit of one’s career goals as an international professional is paramount. In a new landscape filled with uncertainty and setbacks, maintaining a positive outlook and a willingness to learn and adapt can be the key to unlocking opportunities and ultimately achieving success.
What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset is all about the attitude with which a person faces challenges, how they process failures, and how they adapt and evolve as a result. It encourages adaptability and innovation.
How can a growth mindset can help me to get my dream job?
As a job seeker in a new country, you can apply a growth mindset by:
- Exploring unconventional avenues
- Building community with diverse individuals
- Pursuing unexpected opportunities
Furthermore, a job seeker who navigates his new environment with a growth mindset, understands that success is not predetermined by past experiences or qualifications but is instead shaped by the willingness to embrace change and persevere in the face of adversity.
For all of the international professional women out there, remember that embracing a growth mindset in the job search can lead to not only securing employment but also personal growth and fulfillment. By viewing challenges as stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks, YOU can unlock your full potential and thrive in pursuing your career development goals.
